It’s me again! This past week I was able to attend an ice-cream social put on by the Community for Diversity from the College of Natural Resources, or CNR for short. This was a time for us to meet and greet other students and also many of the different staff members a student would not be able to meet on a regular basis. I feel like this was a good experience for all freshmen who were able to attend because they were given the opportunity to meet many of the staff members in their department. One of my former professors made the comment that these types of events are good to show that even if a student is not African American, each of the staff members who are will not hesitate to help you.
Another thing I enjoy about CNR is how close everyone is. This may be due to the fact that we are not the biggest college at NC State, but that’s beside the point. I feel as if I am able to walk into anyone’s office and ask them a question without being nervous of what they would say. If you need a place to just hang out between classes, head downstairs to the Biltmore Beanery where there are drink machines, snack machines, and places to relax and do homework, or even just hang out with a few friends.
There are many different organizations that one could participate in from honors fraternities to something more specific to your major. The good thing about this is that the adviser will usually be someone you have heard of before, or even a professor of yours.
Ten majors are offered here with many of them having specific concentrations to tailor to whatever an individual wants to do. One question I get all the time is, “Why are the majors Professional Golf Management, Sport Management, and Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Management apart of the College of Natural Resources?” Since I have been here at NCSU I somewhat cringe every time I hear that. I guess it’s because I’ve heard it so many times. My own parents even asked me that. Anyways, I learned that the reason they are a part of this college is due to the fact that they all have something to do with environment whether it be people playing on it, or taking care of it. Well anyways, Welcome to the College of Natural Resources!
